We tend to think of tools as something mechanics use but Internet marketers have tools of their trade that need to be taken care of as well. The most important tool of the trade of Internet marketing, of course, is your computer so it should be a priority to maintain it. Beginning Internet marketers sometimes don’t realize how crucial the computer really is; not only do you need to maintain this piece of equipment but you need to prevent data loss as well. An Internet marketer could lose a lot if he or she lost all the important data their computer holds, such as customer lists, account numbers, passwords, and a ton of other pertinent information.
Back Up Daily or Weekly
Some Internet marketers back up their data every single day; others do it on a weekly basis and still others fail to back up their system at all. Unfortunately, if your computer crashes or is otherwise inoperable, it may become impossible to get this information back. Play it safe and back up on a regular basis. There are several options you can use to backup your data, depending on how much data you have to backup. If you’re just starting out, a jump drive will probably do the trick but you are taking a risk if you leave important information in your computer because unfortunately, stuff happens. In addition, it’s a good idea to store your backup data away from your computer in case of fire or theft. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep a backup of your data in a safety deposit box or other safe location where you could access it in an emergency.
Antivirus Protection
Make sure you are using an antivirus program and run full system scans on a regular basis. IN addition, when your subscription expires, which usually happens after a year or after a free trial period, be sure to renew your subscription. Although your antivirus program will continue to work and will continue to scan your computer for viruses, it won’t be able to protect against any new viruses and unfortunately, new viruses come about all the time.
Other Safeguards
Use a surge protector for your computer and related equipment as lightening has put more than a few computers out of commission. Record the serial numbers from all of your equipment and keep your insurance policy up to date. The same goes for warranty information. Take care of your Internet marketing tools and they will help you take care of your business.
If you’ve been interested in Internet marketing for a while then you have no doubt heard about how important it is to drive traffic to your site. But traffic alone won’t bring in the profits. What you need is targeted traffic.
What is Targeted Traffic?
Targeted traffic refers to people who are already interested in what you are marketing. Consider this: Suppose you have a website that caters to some aspect of weddings. If only a small portion of your site visitors are interested in wedding topics then you have a small chance of generating revenue from those visitors. But what if the majority of your site visitors were interested in weddings? Then you would have a much greater chance of generating revenue from those visitors.
How to Target the Right Traffic
In order to bring targeted traffic to your website, you will need to market to the group you are trying to sell to. For instance, if your site caters to weddings, be sure and visit discussion forums that are about weddings. Place a link back to your site in your signature line and when other members of the forum, who are interested in weddings or they wouldn’t be there, click on your link, you have driven targeted traffic to your website.
As you can see, the key to successful Internet marketing isn’t simply to drive traffic to your site but you want site visitors who are interested in what you are promoting. So you need to look for places that people in your niche hang out online and market accordingly.
Building Your List
Since you are concentrating on getting the people who are actually interested in your niche to visit your site, don’t pass up this opportunity to get their email addresses when they do visit. Offer your site visitors an incentive to provide their names and email addresses by offering them something too good to pass up. This could be a newsletter, an ecourse, an ebook, a special report or any number of things your site visitors would likely be interested in receiving, for free. This is not the time to charge; that will come later. First, you want to get their names and email addresses so you can build a list that you can market directly to via email. Then, instead of just having a massive email list, you’ll have a list of people that you know are interested in your niche and will be much more likely to generate profits down the road.

There are two main types of traffic :
Search Engine Traffic - This type of traffic comes from search engines such as Yahoo, MSN and Google. The good thing about it is that it is free, highly targeted and usually helps direct quite a lot of traffic. The not so good thing is that it you can’t control it. You rely on robots to analyze and deliver the traffic to your site, and it is short term.
Referred Traffic - This type of traffic comes from a third party mostly a human source, some examples being forums, banners, article directories and partners. The good thing is that it is can be controlled, it is highly targeted and it is long term. The not so good thing is that it is time consuming, and it is repetitive.
Today it seems that webmasters mostly rely on traffic coming from search engines. However, the correct manner in which to get traffic as the new school of thought recommends is to not use search engines, since search engines give a narrow view in regards to traffic generation, and so one will not be able to see the opportunities that exist outside of search engines in order to generate traffic. You will also not be able to control the traffic if you use search engines and that does not work too well in marketing. The use of search engines to generate traffic should not be your priority. It may be better to focus on referred traffic, as discussed above, in dealing with traffic generation.
If you use referred traffic you will have long term control on your traffic and it can be manually generated rather than by a robot. You can submit content to your feeds, be active in forums and blogs, and even exchange links if you use the referred traffic method. Another way you can use referred traffic is to submit the sitemap of the site to MSN, Google, Yahoo, etc. especially since Google and most search engines make changes to their algorithms on a daily basis in order to produce content that is relevant for the users of their various engines.
When you build referred traffic to your site, you are assisting search engines so as to be able to index your site, rank and understand your site in a better way, and therefore developing search engine traffic as well in a natural manner.
Videos are on thousands of websites across the Internet. There are funny videos, how-to videos, advertising videos, and many other types of videos. Videos can make your website and your products come alive so you may want to seriously consider using them in your marketing efforts.
How To Videos
Numerous sites use how to videos to demonstrate their products or how to do something in their niche. Craft sites, cooking sites, instructional sites, the list is endless for the kinds of sites that use video. Short how to videos are a hit with customers because they instantly believe that they, too, can perform the action seen on the video. How to videos answer questions your customers may not have realized they had. Demonstrating how your product works is a powerful Internet marketing strategy to use to draw in customers.
Show Your Product in Motion
Even if you don’t need to demonstrate how to use your product, showing it being used brings it to life and makes it more exciting. Consumers have responded to television commercials for decades now because they are moved by seeing products being enjoyed by people just like them. Videos are powerful advertising media and have become popular Internet marketing strategies.
Video Testimonials
Video testimonials have become a popular Internet marketing tool that savvy Internet marketers use to show potential customers how satisfied their present customers are. Many people actually like to give video testimonials because they are usually allowed to have a link to their own website attached to the video so their testimonial also provides free advertising for them. Customers see real people enjoying your product instead of “Bob from Ohio” that we’ve seen in countless direct mail catalogues over the years. Nobody ever knew who Bob from Ohio was but when customers see a user from www.theirsite.com enjoying your product, it lends real credibility to the testimonial.
As you conduct your Internet marketing research, take a look at some of the videos on the websites you visit and notice how they move you. Are you entertained, bored, or did you just learn something? Experiment with video strategies on your websites and notice any traffic patterns that may change as a result. You might also make a place for visitors to comment on your videos as any feedback you can get from site visitors could be very useful to your Internet marketing campaigns.
